Celebrating the legacy of Govt. Hobart Higher Secondary School for Muslim Girls, Royapettah, Chennai — Tamil Nadu's pioneer institution for Muslim women's education since the pre-independence era.
Govt. Hobart Higher Secondary School is Tamil Nadu's pioneering institution for Muslim women's education. Established during the pre-independence era by the Governor of the Madras Presidency, Lord Robert Hart Hobart, the school was conceived to provide quality education specifically for Muslim girls at a time when few such opportunities existed.
Progressive Muslim community leaders founded a lower primary school in Royapettah. As enrolment grew, the Government took over and relocated it to its present campus — generously donated by Nawab Humayoon Jah Bahadur — where it has stood for over a century and a half.
Today, alumnae of Hobart are found across the world in medicine, law, academia, business, and public service. The Hobart Alumni Foundation carries that mission forward: ensuring every deserving girl has the opportunity to carry her education — and her future — forward.
